What’s the Dollar Dance or Money Dance?

Have you ever heard the term “Dollar Dance” or “Money Dance?” According to Wikipedia, the definition of “money dance” is:

“The money dancedollar dance, or apron dance is an event at some wedding receptions in various cultures. During a money dance, male guests pay to dance briefly with the bride, and sometimes female guests pay to dance with the groom.

Sometimes guests are told that the money will be used for the bride and groom's honeymoon or to give them a little extra cash with which to set up housekeeping.” (Wikipedia)

It’s popular in some cultures, and in others it’s not. Some couples worry, even if it’s expected by their culture, that it may feel like an overt ask for money. But, if you explain that it’s a cultural tradition, many guests may participate and it’s a fun way for family members to interact with the bride and groom.

The money dance/dollar dance varies for different cultures, too.

“Depending on the culture, as a guest, you may participate for as little as a dollar. Many guests will bring large bills and have them broken into smaller ones as part of the "show." The average money dance or money spray spend is $30 but can be upwards of $100.” (Brides.com)
